How do I trace Thomas Smith (father) from this marriage cert ?

Thomas Smith..labourer..living: Shelton
(born c1808..Mucklestone, Salop)

**Father: Thomas Smith..labourer**

Sarah Machin..living: Shelton
Father: Robert Machin..butcher

I have looking on the 1841 census and on IGI but there are so many Thomas Smiths ! How do I go about finding the correct one ?

Have looked at the parent search and that doesn't bring up anyone definate.

Do I now need to look at Parish records as don't just want to make a guess ?
