Any number of reasons. It could just be an ommision by the registrar, depending on when the cert is from. They may not have known who their mother was. If both parents are dead and there is no one to ask. They may have only known their father. She could have left and it was never talked about. You may have to get the birth record, if you need the name . The usual reason is they did not know.

The english ones just do. The scottish ones have both mothers names, sometimes the fathers jobs.
Witnesses, etc. Much more helpful

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't marriage certificates normally just have father's name and not mother's?
