You might find that she was not sure where she was born. One of mine showed as being born in Sevenoaks, Kent. He was actually born in Lewes, Sussex, but the family had moved to Sevenoaks when he was about one year old.

Sometimes the ancestry index has been transcribed incorrectly, for example the transcriber might have taken the place of birth from a previous name higher up the page in error. I have come across this on a few occasions.

However, as has been said already, if the actual image states the birthplace as Devon, then there is nothing you can do to change it.

Is she actually in Devon at the time or were her siblings born there? If thats the case then it would be a simple mistake with dittos or whatever.

If the census record states that her birthplace was Devon, there is no blame to be laid at Ancestry's door....they transcribe the info as they see it.

Have you viewed the image?

I have a rellie who changed where she was born on almost every census record! What or who was she hiding from I wonder! To me that is part of the puzzle and fascination of genealogy

Actually, they normally acknowledge corrections to names within a week or so.

If there is something on the census then they wont change it because if everyone changed things through family legend or memory we could end up in a real old mess.

Just one thing Joyce - not being rude here - but are you sure you have the right person on the census? Devon is a long way from Liverpool.

I'd forget that comments thing. My experience is they take so long to load I don't bother. And there's no indication on the records there even is a comment, as I recall.

Here's what I do. Just add a name variation.

If her name is Jane Smith and you know her middle name, add it. Then in the comment section, add the info about her birth place. Include the GRO reference for her birth maybe.

If you don't know her middle name, add her married surname. (But call it *birth surname* rather than name change or anything else -- otherwise Ancestry will apply it to everyone in the household. I know.)

Or just add a variation giving her first initial instead of her first name.

If you want to be really brazen, change her name to

Jane born Liverpool
Smith

I do that when they have dates of birth horribly wrong (e.g. an ancestor of mine has a child supposedly older than her):

Jane wrong DOB
Smith

just so it might catch someone's eye some day, right in the results list without having to go to the individual record, and they don't skip over it as being too wrong to be right.

Also, Joyce, don't hold your breath for them to change it SOON because that message has been there for years!

If you click on View Record there's an option to add comments and corrections under Page Tools at the top left. You can't currently add corrections for places though.

"NOTE: Currently we can only accept submissions for alternate names. We will soon add fields for alternate places, dates, and more. For now, please enter ALTERNATE NAMES ONLY.
Other information will NOT be searchable! "
