Birth Certificate help, please

After a lot of searching I finally sent off for a birth certificate for someone from nearly 70 years ago. On the right hand side, just outside the box it says Adopted (that's all, nothing else). The parents were married 18 months before the birth and were batchelor/spinster. Registration of birth was 26 days afterwards.

Can anyone enlighten me what it means, please? Does it mean that the child was adopted by both parents, or was it by one of the parents? I am at a loss.

I would have thought that she was adopted by someone else.
She would not need to be adopted by her own parents.

Legal parents wouldn't need to adopt their own child.
I wonder if the father died (or the parents divorced) and she was adopted by the mother's 2nd husband?

How is she connected to you, Mary?

Thank you for the replies.
The birth certificate would be as though the child was their own.
I would have thought nothing of it, just that word on the right hand side - Adopted (underlined) with the registrar's name and Superintendent Registrar underneath.

The parents marriage certificate says batchelor/spinster and they were married 18 months before the child's birth.

The father would be a distant cousin of mine. I do not know of anyone to ask. I do not know if the child is still alive. They were in a different area and I will need to wait for the 1911 census to find out anything further.

Have just rang the GRO and they explained it to me. Aparently, this is the original birth certificate, but the child was given up by the parents and adopted. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing the adoptive name or anything else. Sad, but there it is.
Can I say thank you for all your help, such a great bunch of people here.

I would look for a later marriage of one or other of the parents.
The step parent may then have adopted the child, as suggested in Potty's post.
