Hello All,
Have just been given a bible of my grt grt grandfathers. I would love to know what his handwriting says- I think it maybe a prayer or verse of some sort. Only trouble is that I have an Y Bibl and only rudimentary welsh. Would anyone be willing to have a go at the script below please? All spelling errors will be mine- as it was hard to decipher some of the letters!
Here goes:

May well be too difficult as I know some of the words don't 'look' right even to me. Any help on any of the lines gratefully appreciated though

Dear Lynne,
Thank you ever so much. You had far more sense than me- I was looking the words up one at a time in the dictionary we have at home! As you say- some of the words, I really can't make out very well at all- but, as you would expect in the front of a bible, it seems he has quoted a verse or some such.

Then Y Bibl : the Bible
A great and valuable treasure it is
that we have been given by our God,
In which to research and study,
A ... way of living.
It shows to us the love of God
which is our succour
The love of God is a way through
Son of his own breast(!)
Shows to me his satisfaction
he had in the son

given to him by the father

Sorry it's getting a bit garbled now, my Welsh isn't fluent. Maybe some one more able can finish. They seem to be religious verses rather than quotes fro the bible. The last one is about the Love of God. I'm not too good at religious language either but it's a start for you.

I haven't been able to identify all the words (it's very late at night) but here's a guess at the original words (I've updated some of the old-fashioned spelling) and a literal translation of them. If you can send me a facsimile, I could make a better guess at the missing words. I've set out what I think the original words are, followed by the translation:

Thank you all so much. I was struggling quite badly with this yesterday!
The bible is a new one that was started by my grt grt grandfather as the older family bible (such a shame) was burnt due to a black sheep in the family (the relative was gay and went to live in America).
Henry (grt grt grandfather) has written in the front that he bought the bible from Queens Street Arcade- it has on the front that the bible is part of the English and Foreign (!) Bible Society. Henry was born in 1876 and I can read that he bought the bible on Boxing Day, but the year has faded away. The bible was kept wrapped up in his grand-daughter Haiddwen's wedding dress all these years- am a bit nervous about having it with me to be honest.
I don't actually have a scanner, but do have the reliable digital camera-would gladly try and zoom these across to you via attachment by email.
I was thrilled to bits with the discovery as it now means that all of my great great grandparents on my Mum's side were welsh speakers- and now here I am asking for translations! What surprised me more was that this family were living in a place called Flower (Fleur de Lis) in monmouthshire so I thought that they would be quite Anglicised at this time.
If I can send across any other passages that anyone may like let me know as I am sure I can give it a stab.
