Christine,

In the C19 "in-law" often meant step-child. Perhaps Mary had children by a Mr Smallwood before marrying James Hydon.

Son in law and daughter in law usually meant that the wife had been married previously and they were her children from the first marriage.
The husband has sort of adopted them, there was no formal way to do it.

They are his son and daughter in "the law"

Alfred Smallwood, son in law, unmrd, 17yo, labourer, as above.
Louisa Smallwood, daug in law, 13yo, no occ, born as above.
Agnes Smallwood, daug in law, 8yo, scholar, born as above.

1871 census
33 Comyn street, Leamington Priors
Mary Hydon, Head, mrd, 53yo, Laundress, born warwickshire.
Emma Smallwood, daug, unmrd, 30yo, gen serv, born as above.

Eliza J Hydon, dau, unmrd, 13yo, nursemaid, as above.
George H Hydon, son, 10yo, pageboy [?], born as above.

All of the Hydon people are my family. What I can't work out is who are the Smallwoods and how can they be daug in law and son in law to the head of the house and also at such a young age? Also, why is Emma Smallwood down as daug to the head in 1871?
Chrissie.
