The Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland: Edited by Francis H. Groome (1892-6) is available online:
http://www.electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/

In addition to the text, which is accessed by the initial of the place name, the photos and maps are available. The maps show the parishes, and typically cover a single county - some are big - abt 10 exceed 15 MB.

I find them very useful, but each to their own.

Hi Wendy,

When you say what does Do mean? Is it do under the address you mean? if it is then it just means they all live in the same street but at differnt numbers in that street.

Also is it Scottish or English maps and what area is it you are searching.?

Genuki.org.uk is great for maps, old and new. Just type in the town and up they come.

Also try the relevant county RO/society to see whether they have maps (eg Lancashire has a good series).

This site aims to identify placenames on current and Victorian maps (as well as connect those searching for particular names in specific places)

Not sure where about the DO is that you are referring to but it is often used in place of ditto, meaning 'the same as the one above'.

Does anyone know if there is a web site for maps dating back to, 1800- 1960s, that are printable and does'nt cost money?

I hope someboby will be kind enough to enlighten me.
