Just for information...

if the parents of a child are married at the time of the birth, then the birth record will almost definitely be under the father's name, with the maiden name of the mother alongside.

IF the birth mother has a child with another man (not her husband -and this applied to a friend's birth record) the birth will be under either the woman's married name and/or the birth father's name.

So, for example, if Miss Smith marries Mr Jones but has a baby with Mr Green, whilst still officially married, the birth will be under Jones or Green - which is very confusing !

Not sure if that helps

Thanks for these replies. It is a living relative but tricky as X husband of 33yrs ago so I cannot ask the person concerned.

I have checked the index's in find my past for him and have gone back to 1946 and up to 1950 but he is not there.

His mothers maiden name will enable me to double check that his father's side of the tree is correct as I do know his fathers full name.

Hi I was looking for my Dad's birth which was Nov 1942. His birth was not registered until April 1943. It might be worth checking the following year too.

I don't see how someone's mother's maiden name would confirm a marriage - or am I missing something?

You need to look at the complete index on ancestry or find my past. If you are just looking at freebmd you wont find anyone after the first decade or so of the 20th century.

Cannot find a person through their dob. I know I have the date correct and wanted to trace their mother's maiden name to confirm her marriage.

Their birth year was 1949 I thought that everyone had to be registered within a certain time period after their birth.

What am I doing wrong.
