I agree with Claire, who doesn't like Newbys?

Ask you Q and stick around is the best advice a newby can be given,

Hi Sheila

Loads of us have Irish ancestors and it helps if you know where they actually came from..if not then is going to be more of a struggle.

The LDS website is by no means complete so don't get discouraged. The civl registrations for all of Ireland is gradually being added to the site but it will take some time. c.1840 for non Catholics and 1864 for Catholics.

Birth and Marriage certificates can be ordered from Ireland even if you only have an approx year, but you will need to know the County and at least a father's name. Sayng that, if it's a common Irish surname that could be a problem. The Irish are inclined to use the same Christian names too in every generation as so many of us have discovered.....

So you might find that whoever you are looking for could have cousins and fathers with the same names.

They are also inclinded to use their middle names but are registered under a totally different name.

eg my Gt Grandfather Michael Patrick Brady ..one of his son's was baptised as Michael Charles Brady but he was known as Charles Brady.

Here are the websites for ordering Certificates from Ireland. Have a read of the information too as it will help you understand what is available.

Hi Thanks all for your comments and tips sorry if I offended anyone but I was just feeling sorry for myself and after reading the tips board everyone else seemed to know what they are doing.

Teresa, I have already come across the problem of repeated names I always thought my mum was called May but she was actually Margaret I thought it was just my family didn't have much imagination.

Will let you know how I get on with the other sites.

Many thanks

Sheila

Hi Sheila,

Phew, who are all these people who know what they are doing? I sometimes know what I am doing, and very often I don't. I forget it I have not done it for a while, I get frustrated and cross with myself, it is all understandable.

Don't worry, there are lots of us who understand all this cos we have been through it ourselves.

Offence is rarely taken.

Happy hunting,

Margaret
