Hi i am struggling a bit not very good with computers.Im trying to trace my grandfather with the help of another member on genes reunited. On the birth cert.of my mother it has a reference code which could be his mod issue number or it could be his merchant navy issue number or something completely else.Any how can anybody out there reading this have any tips on going about finding info via the merchant navy and any other tips on trying to locate someone i have his birth cert his marrige cert and it seems he is still alive. I would really be gratefull for any tips as i have hit a brick wall. My gran recently died and i am desperate to find him in the past she was obsructive.I know that he attempted to see my mother on several attempts but my gran wouldnt let him.

You could try the national archives web site and see what you find

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/power-search.asp?searchType=powersearch

I seem to remember someone downloading seamans records from the site,

Pm sent. Have suggested Southampton Archives or the National Archives.
