Hi Kathlyn
If you have been able to find him in say the 1881census,have a look at his neighbours. Then search for them (the neighbours) in previous census.

In England + Wales on Ancestry, one can only use occup in 1881 - in other years, it's not been transcribed. However, this isn't true of Scotland where you can add the occup in the keyword box. It's not without its drawbacks - even if you use print* to catch printer, printing press operator and print shop owner, you'll miss out on compositor. Although the transcriptions are better than the usual standard on the English censuses, jailer, sailor and tailor are pretty much interchangeable.

If only parents of children with a common surname gave them a "different" Christian name, like.......Flowers....and yes I do have a Flowers Woodland.

I have been searching for a very common name...Robert Roberts in the 1861/71 census. My head is spinning and my eyes going crossed with all the possible Roberts.

I have tried many in the right location/age and wonder if I could narrow my search down a bit using his occupation?
