Hi
I have quite a few Licensed victuallers on one side of my family and several of them woman.
Usually the daughter or the sister of existing pub owners. My lot practically ran Wantage in Berkshire at one time.
What you have to remember is that some of these pubs were just ale houses and only allowed to serve beer.
Others were licensed to sell spirits and beer.
Some people use to sell beer in their front rooms
I have recently come across a website History of London and on one part of this site lists all the pubs in London and who ran them in what census. Also certain counties, like kent etc
Also the Kelly's directories are a fantastic source of info.
I think the full works can be found in the Metropolitan archives in London. If not a good local archive or large library might hold the local directories.
Any license was usually reviewed at a quarter session annually. so if you find the local council name at that time, that may help you.
They just didnt deal with Pub licenses they also dealt with market traders with Hawker licenses as well.Settlement certificates etc.
Hope this helps

I have a female relative who in the 1850's was a licenced victualler in t Giles Cripplegate, East London, I find this interesting have a female listed as this and she does not seem to have been married. Does anyone know where I can find out more, is there an association I can contact. Am I right that this is name for someone who ran a public house?
