The site is also very good for checking out the spelling of places. Quite often place names are spelt incorrectly in the census, other peoples trees and other places and I often go on GenUk to check them out.

Hi Derek

Good advice, I've found all sorts of info that has been transcribed from different directories, parish records and newspapers. Try this link to search Genuki itself.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/search/

There is also ukbmd which has links to all different County and National websites (not just bmd). Just select the County you want on the left and click 'County'. It has links to lots of 'One name studys'.

Derek, I quite agree. GENUKI is a fantastic source of information.
I have it in my favourites. One of the excellent bits in there are the detailed 'Registration Districts of England & Wales' You can search by county or there is an alphabetical list of districts and index of place names.

Good tip:...If you're looking for someone or some help in, for instance a small village..Google it..say Loughborough....scroll down to GENUKI Loughborough....not all places will give you a Genuki, but by and large its very satisfying.Very often you'll see a whole load of stuff that links you to all sorts of records, some of which you can use on line....surprising how many Parish registers it gives you access to...........Try it!
