Can't help with what the record means, Karen but you might find the will online on the National Archives site. If you do find it, it costs £3.50 to download.

Dear all,

I posted this a few days ago - I'm still unsure as to what the record means - I really would appreciate it if anybody can help please.

Thank you
Karen.

Thanks Jill,

Hadn't thought of that - it's possible I suppose - the Smarts I have on my tree were all ag labs - I was wondering whether somehow they managed to get their own land to work on.

It sounds more like an apprenticeship record or something. Or maybe some sort of Power of Attorney ... ? Weird.

Could the gr stand for granted ?

Hi

Can someone please help me understand what this record means:-

Northamptonshire: - Administrations, Archdeaconry of Northampton, 1667-1710
Date. Persons. Burials.
Northamptonshire Administrations of the Archdeaconry of Northampton 1677-1830
1678
County: Northamptonshire
Country: England
Smart, Thomas, of Earl's Barton, clerk, gr. 09 Nov 1678 to John Smart, of Grendon, yeoman, the father. Sureties, Richard Carpenter, yeoman, and Alexander Hadland, yeoman, both of same. (40)

Was it Thomas Smart that died? and what does gr. mean?

Also if you find a record in the Calender of Wills on Ancestry how do you/can you obtain a copy of the will?

Thank you
Karen.
