CyndisList is always a good starting point for foreign genealogy:

It seems like the NS govenment gave up on civil registration just before your two were born.
So the best bet would be parish registers - try contacting the local FHS

The NB provincal archives do have a birth record for your Florrie:

For reference, Amherst is in Cumberland Cty: it's only 15 km from Sackville NB, which is in Westmorland Cty - really inventive names, eh.

You mentioned you can find her family backwards and forwards. Does that include Sarah? Except for the 1881 census, can you find her on other documents (after 1880)?

Would you know when she was born, please?

Hi Lisa

I can't seem to find them on the 1881 census for Canada, no. Which is a bit of a mystery... if anyone could find a trace of them as a married couple that would be fantastic. I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to go about finding out anything more about William...

I didn't look too closely at the counties covered, but I didn't see anything about McNaughton or Hale here:
https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/

Are they on the 1881 census?

Hi All

I wonder if any of you can help me?

I've got a newspaper report of my great great grandmothers marriage in Amherst, Nova Scotia in 1880. The family all want to find out more about her husband, and the only way I can think to get further back is to find her marriage cert or an entry in a parish register. As I can't afford to jet off to Canada right now, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way of obtaining either item online or by post?

The details I have are:

m. Amherst, NS (Nova Scotia), 20th ult, by Rev D C Lawson, William McNaughton, Amherst and Miss Sarah Hale, Risca, England.

I've traced Sarah in Risca (actually in Wales) before and after this, and her family backwards and forwards, but can't find anything 100% about her husband.

Many many thanks

Paula
