Gwyn in Kent Report 13 Oct 2008 08:26

Under what conditions were these granted?
Browsing the newspapers on line site I came across the report of a murder in a village where ancestors lived. The accused had previously been sentenced to 7 years transportation, but had come back to the area after being granted a ticket of leave.( before 7 years had passed)

1) Would he have been transported for the previous offence?

2) Who would have decided that he could have his freedom, .. and were conditions attached?

Any help please would be most welcome.

Thank you for that link David.

I'm still not clear about whether or not the accused ever went overseas.....
He was tried and executed in England within the 7 years after the previous conviction.

From 1848 transportation sentances where only carried out if the sentance was more than 10 years.
My great great grandfather was sentanced to 7 years transportation in 1850 and ended up in Millbank Prison.

Thank you for the added posts.
I will have to check the online papers for the transportation sentence, but the later murder was in 1862.
It is interesting to hear that 'transportation' didn't always mean that they were shipped overseas.
