Could anybody telll me of any good websites or other contacts for Blacksmiths. Three of my ancestors were blacksmiths (on different lines) and two of these lived in the early 1800's and I've been unable to get back any further on those two lines. I presume that they were apprenticed somewhere but don't know if any records are available.

If you google 'blacksmiths' there is a little bit of info but also try under farrier and veterinary surgeon. I didn't realise that blacksmith also went under these names until I had to sort one of my families out. Hope this helps a little.

I have a 'brickwall' early 1800s with my blacksmiths.
I was told that often the fathers taught their sons and then no apprenticeship papers will be available.
I hope you will be luckier where you're looking.
I believe mine moved from a village and possibly became involved with making nails used in shipbuilding.
