If a baby is baptised in hospital because they are very ill. where would the record be kept?
Do hospitals have their own records of such events or would the record be in the parish registers of the hospital chaplain's own parish?

gwyn, i would think it would be the hospital records that you need to look through, hospitals have there own chapels and priests so i would think that the records would be kept by the hospital involved, but i could be wrong.x

Gwyn,

I have experience of two: the City of London Lying-in Hospital register, a physical book, is held by the London Metropolitan Archives. The LMA also has a microfilm of the parish register of St Marks, Marylebone, which also includes baptisms carried out in Queen Charlotte's Hospital.

However, practice is likely to vary across the country. The simple answer is to ring up or email the county record office and ask them.

Gwyn, my husband was baptised in the hospital where he was born as he was very ill and not expected to survive.
A record was made by the local vicar in his church register so it is worth looking at church records in the same area as the hospital.

Thank you for your thoughts on this.

Yesterday should have been the birthday of a baby in our family, who died aged 10 weeks. I know all the details re. age, parents, but just wondered where the records would be. I don't know if it was a hospital chaplain or a local vicar who baptised her.

I would start by asking at the hospital where she was born
