Family 'Marriage'

I think it was fairly common for a young woman to 'keep house' for relatives, including unmarried older uncles.
I had one such case and I must admit I was relieved to see that she later married someone her own age and moved away. Uncle was an unmarried farmer so I suppose it made practical sense for her to be there at first.

guess that discounts it then (I hope) as they lived in the same road as the rest of the family.....phew.....

Does anyone know how common partnerships between people of the same family is likely to have been in the mid-1800's?

I have what appears to be an Uncle and Niece who lived as man and wife. I realise that they couldn't have married, but how severely would society have viewed such a union (if it's correct)?
