Angela this is really good forum, you have to register but it is free:

You can upload photos, there are many experts on there, they identified some uniforms and badges for me and explained why a gt uncle from Grantham was in the Manchester Regiment. Well worth a look

Many thanks for your replies.
It may have seemed like a stupid question, but army / war research is new to me.
I guess at the end of the day it didn't matter what nationality you were as long as you were on the same side!
This makes me more convinced it is my grandad and I intend to find out more.

Also, its worth bearing in mind, that during massive casulaties, regiments that were almost wiped out, were re-combined to form new units.

Even in WW2 my uncle was transferred from the Warwicks to the Royal Berkshire, after they were badly depleted by enemy action in Burma.

Please can someone help.
I have allocated - on line - what I believe may be a medal card for my grandfather who fought in WW1 (according to a cousin of mine).
He was born in Leicester 1899.
On his medal card it first has Royal Scots & a service number and underneath has Leicestershire Regiment & a service number.
Is it likely that he would be sent / requested to serve with a Scottish regiment?
Many thanks for any help.
