Hi Everyone

I'm relatively new to this but after being informed about familysearch.org I've found a lot of info but I've hit a brick wall.

Is there any other good websites that I can look at next?

I'm going to be looking at the bmd websites soon but I'm wondering if there's any other good websites to look at

Thanks

If you are looking for a list of websites that may help with your research, one of the best places to look is FamilyTreeForum www.familytreeforum.com

If you go to the Wiki section (Reference Library) and click on, for example, the icon for The British Isles, you will find each county has its own page, with links listed relevant to that particular county.

You don't need to register to look at the Wiki, but registration is free and will give you full access to the whole site. Just click on the word REGISTER in the navigation bar and complete the details - you wont be disappointed!

Me again!

I'm struggling to understand how familytreeforum works if I'm honest!

Anybody else got any other ideas?

I've completely and utterly exhausted familysearch.org and found reams of info from it.

So I'm just wondering if there's anywhere else that anyone knows of?

Hi Natasha,

What exactly have you found so far, and what is it you are hoping to find? Familysearch isn't a good starting place as there's no recent stuff on it. You ought to start with yourself and work systematically backwards through the generations in order to make sure you are following the right people on Familysearch.

Thanks Janice

My mum's cousin has found alot of info out so I've traced it back on family search from there.

I've got lots of dates of people but I would like to find abit more information about where they lived and what they did for a living, so I'm assuming the census records will show me, but I don't know where else I could look.

The only sites which have censuses are pay sites. Most people seem to use Ancestry or findmypast. The 1881 is free both on Ancestry and familysearch but you can't view the images.

The first census which has useful info is the 1841.

Hi Natasha,

Yes, for where they lived and what they did you need the census data. Baptismal registers give father's occupation; marriage certs have occupations, addresses and fathers' occupations.
If you are lucky enough to have employers amongst them, you might find them in trade directories.

Have fun,
Janice

www.ancestry.co.uk is a good site, it gives you a free 14 day trial, census's 1841 - 1901 ww1 service records, regional directories, all sorts of things, bdm 1837 - 2005, you should give it a go.
