I think you'll find that even after 1875 some births were still not registered. I read an article about it in one of those Family History magazines where a chap had done some research on this in a specific area.

Prior to 1875, it was the registrars job to record events by visiting the persons concerned, undoubtably, not all births were recorded, after 1875 it became the parents job to go to the registrar under penalty of fine.

Birth registration as not compulsory until 1875.........

There were undoubtedly more births NOT registered than actually were.

Has anyone ever experienced a birth never having been registered? Is this possible? Is it possible that this would have happened in 1857?
