Hi all,

I am at a brick wall - I am trying to find information on my great great grandfater. His name was Walter H Smith and he married Kate Deacon in 1914 in West Ham. They went on to live and have children in the same location, including twin Girls Molly and Dorothy Smith brn 1929. This is all the information I have on him, so do not know how to progress to finding his parents, as I don't know where or when he was born. Do I now have to go offline and purchase the marriage certificate or are there other things I can do online to find information on him?

Thanks for any advice,

Katie

If you buy his marriage certificate it will tell you his age so you will know when he was born. It will also tell you the name an occupation of his father which will make it easier to find him on the 1901 census.

With a name as common as Smith, you really need the certificate otherwise you could be following the wrong family.

Because Smith is such a common name it would make sense to buy the marriage cert, then if that doesnt help his birth cert later

This looks like Kate. You could guess that Walter would be about the same age to narrow things down - but you probably need the marriage certificate.

You could also looks for the Wedding on Parish records but they are probably only on microfilm.

This looks like the marriage - you can buy the cert online from this site: www.gro.gov.uk/

With the references given below it will cost you £7 (tick the box that asks if you have the GRO ref);
