Canada Help Needed, Ebenezer White (1888)

Heather Report 20 Oct 2008 13:01

I am desperate to locate Ebenezer White born 6th April 1888 in Bethnal Green, London, England. In England he was a cabinet maker, journeyman.

His parents were Charles and Belinda (white) and his brothers Charles, Herbert and Percy. He had a sister Rosina (Rose).

In 1916 he received his call up papers and left Engand for Canada. He left behind a son Alfred White (my grandad). He wrote to Alfred in about 1923 and said he had made a new life in Canada Ontario or Toronto.

Alfred searched all his life for Ebenezer and I am trying to find him now. We know he went to Canada with his girlfriend who was a nurse.

We also know that he could play the Church Organ. He hated his name Ebenezer so maybe he changed it?

Any help in locating this White family in Canada would be everso much appreciated by my whole family. Does anyone have access to WW1 call up papers in Canada? or death records?

Heather Williams (nee White)

Hi Heather

Haven't checked your other threads, you may already know:

There is a site www.automatedgenealogy.com, which if you follow the links will take you to a site with Soldiers of the First World War, where you can search for anyone who enlisted. I did not find an Ebenezer or an appropriate E. White. In all there are 1833 persons with the last name of White; it'll take a while to check all those!

For what it is worth Toronto is in Ontario.

All Commonweath WWI deaths are found on the excellent U.K. site www.cwgc.org (which seems to be down at the moment).

Can't help with deaths but will say Canadian records are "locked up" for a very long time. For example, I won't be able to access my Grandfather's until next year, when he will have been dead for 80 years. It varies by Province, however. Perhaps someone else can help you with that.

Good luck.

Thank you for this.

Do you know if someone from UK would have needed to enlist in 1916? if they were about 30 years old?

Hi Heather

August 29, 1917 the Military services Act came into being in Canada allowing conscription but apparently there were many exemptions. For example Farmers exemptions were not lifted until the spring of 1918.

Of those who were conscripted many did not end up in the Expeditionary Force.

For an answer perhaps more specific to your ancestor you could Google Conscription WWI Canada or something similar and see if anything you find applies.

Happy Hunting.

The gateway:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html
actually the one I normally use for searching the census. The URL Judy gave leads to links between guys on the census and their attestation papers. Since your guy wasn't here in 1911, there'll be no link. However you can search the attestation papers directly at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/index-e.html

From the usual IGI search site, click on record search - record search pilot in the top blue bar. This will give you access to ONT pre-WW2 deaths.

Im sorry to be a pain - I found the site but I could not find anything that said record search.

Can you help me with a link to the right page of the site. Can I search on deaths with a surname and date of birth only do you think?

Birth
White 06/04/1888 bethnal Green London England

As he may have changed his first name Ebenezer?

Hover your mouse pointer over "search records" there is a dropdown box which takes you to:-

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?datestamp=1203266631718

Now click on "view all collections" and select the records that interest you.
