What will I find on a marriage church record ?

In most parishes, from 1813 on, I think preprinted registers were used (I've capitalized the preprinted bits), so a typical entry (# 123 here) would read:

John Smith OF the PARISH of Alnwick
AND Jane Brown OF this PARISH
WERE MARRIED IN THIS Church BY Banns WITH CONSENT OF
Parents THIS Sixteenth DAY OF
March IN THE YEAR ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND Fourteen
BY ME Michael Green Curate
THIS MARRIAGE WAS SOLEMNIZED BETWEEN US John Smith, x Jane Brown her mark
IN THE PRESENCE OF Arnold Black, Mary Smith
NO 123

The only place parents names might occur is in the "consent" space, but usually "parents" appears (well, usually it's blank, but I've never seen any other entry, but I've not seen a huge number).

If you actually saw the register, you might notice Arnold Black was the witness on 75% of the 1814 marriages, and thus conclude he probably was not a relative.

Hi Christine,

There may yet be a small glimmer of hope for you,
if it was only an Index, do you know if he was " of this parish"

The Banns are quite useful in finding which parish they were from.

Kind regards
Amanda

Just had a look at IGI batch numbers for Lyncombe & Widcome. There weren't any searchable databases on line...............maybe church contact necessary.

Thanks Shirley for the information, I do have the names of the witnesses but it did not help finding the parentage of my gg grandfather.
But thanks for that, I now know it would be a waste of my time trying to locate the original

The Parish records of marriages pre 1837 ,that i have copies of, didn't give any parents name, they would state the bride & grooms names and their status ie spinster/bachelor/widower and may say of full age or minor and whether of the parish . the witnesses sometimes may give a clue to the family.

If I was lucky enough to locate an original church record of a marriage, what information would be recorded ?
I know that my g g grandfather married in the parish of Lyncombe and Widcome, Bath on the 20/10/1814 in the Church of St Mark. These details were kindly given to me by one of the people who offer to do Parish look up but she only had the index.
I wondered whether the original would give details of his father, as marriage certificates give now.
Does anyone know ?
