Sue - they don't send them to the archives, but then, they're never really inactive anyway - someone like you could come along and ask for a cert from that register.

Note that not all marriages recorded in the registrars own register took place in a Register Office - in 1903, the main exception would be RC marriages, but before 1898 all non-conformist too. There are actually two ceremonies condycted at a regular church wedding: firstly, there's the religious ceremony; then there's the civil ceremony, which normally concludes with the signing of the register in the vestry afterwards. Only C of E priests (and jews and quakers) were initially trusted with overseeing the signing of the register, so if you got married in some other faith, the registrar would have to attend to oversee the signing, and these marriages would naturally wind up in his register.

Just look it up on free BMD and the refs should be there. then order on line from Gro. online. £7

You find the GRO ref in the indexes and send off for the certificate in the usual way.
