Hi guys,

I'm currently researching my partner's ancestry, and his mother mentioned to me that she thought that there was some Jewish link somewhere. How would I go about looking into this? There aren't any obvious links i.e. Jewish names...

Do it the same way as any name - start with your partner, his parents, grandparents etc until you hit/don't hit a batch of names that sound Jewish.

Will marriages etc state that they took place in a synagogue?

Marriages in a synagogue will show the usual details. Not surprisingly, only Jewish people or converts to the religion can be married there.

A marriage certificate will state Marriage Solemnized at the ??? Synagogue.

The bottom section will state.....
Married in the ??? Synagogue
According to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Jewish Religion.

The 'By Me' section will then give the name of the person conducting the ceremony and will include his status as a Rabbi, Chief Rabbi.

.... but you won't be able to tell that from the indexes unfortunately.

Janice should have said:
.... but you won't be able to tell that from the GRO indexes unfortunately.

However, the GRO isn't the only official source of certificates - one can also buy them from the local RO, and some have their indices online, or at least partially, and these may tell you. E.g.,:
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1839
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
