Kath B is quite right in her assessment of the odds - of nearly 200,000 marriages in 1881, the status of the bride was "divorced" in only fifty-odd cases.

I presume it's Christopher Barnabus Johnson that she married? On the 1871 census there's a step-daughter named Mary M. Whaley, aged 7.

'late' in this context means 'lately' or 'previously' It does not relate to a person's mortality..............

She could have been divorced from Mr.Walley but in 1871 it is much more likely that he died.

Thanks...that makes sense - I would then assume that 'late' indicates her 1st husband died.
