Jim thanks for this. Reaaly appreciate your time
Our records show that the Joe is Ok, Hannah a bit out in terms of date, Sarah look Ok William also but no Thomas Henry unless I have missed it -1851 sats it is a James Henry, right time but wrong first name

Thanks Christine
I will do that. A question I have not seen on IGI where the record is from -maybe a bit hasty when looking
I will look again for Mary and check the Joe Lofthouse record
Portugal seems a long way form Huddersfield lol

I am actually from Huddersfield, but it's a long time since I lived there.

I would try the library, they will do a free 30 min search and as you know the birth year and probable church it should be found if he was baptised.

Christine, the marriage certificate says Parish of St John's Huddersfield.

Your knowledge of Huddersfield is so good, and thanks fo taking the time to help me, I do appreciate it .
I have looked for Thomas Storks on 1841 quite a few if one stabs at 1805 birth with 10 years either side, most not in Huddersfield though.

I have often wondered whether the birth places of my great grandfather and his brother were a result of the fact that Joseph their father was a paper traveller and Jane went with him or whether they had family in the two places
Harry my great grandfather was born in Heckmonwike and his brother Joseph William in Clerkenwell so I keep an eye out when I am searching

I have found that illegitimate children were mostly baptised.

Was it St John's Birkby where the marriage took place, that would be nearer to where Jane lived.

Hi Christine, not sure if he would have been baptised at St Peters or St Johns. His bro Joseph married at St Johns. Also if he was illegitimate would he have been baptised/ Thanks for the address though. It is frustrating sometimes to be so far away lol

David, thank you for the suggestion re 1841 census -will look at that - did try the 1851 census but lots of Thomas Storks but did not think of 1841
Also advice that sometime the mother's of illegitimate children put the father's name on - the certifcate.
Mary named my great great grandfather Joseph Lofthouse Armitage which was how I managed to trace a link. IGI has the birth of a Joe Lofthouse Armitagee with a father George and Mother Mary.

Thank you also for the tip re the bastardry site - first I had heard of that.

If I had the measn to check the address in 1851, that might help but do not subscribe to than site.
I cannot find mary Lofthouse on IGI, although I found George and her marriage. The Thomas birth certifcate was to be the clincher as I hoped it wpould have George as the father!
Joseph Lofthouse Armitage's marriage certificate has the father as George 13 August 1857
It has George's occcupation as brickmaker. However this does not mean he was alive at the time. Jospeh married Jane Carruthers, thier address is bradford Road, her father is John occupation dyer

The baptism record may show more details, sometimes they do.

The family in the 1841 are certainly living in the correct area for a birth in Trinity Street in 1844.

Huddersfield Library may look up the baptism if you email them, it would probably be at St Peters, where the marriage took place.

I have found the library very helpful..

I am not sure where to go next, any suggestions would be welcome
I now have a certifcate for a Thomas Henry Stork Armitage born 8 May 1844 Huddersfield Mother Mary Armitage nee Lofthouse - no 6 Trinity Street Huddersfield, but NO father named.

Mary Armitage nee Lofthouse (birth abt 1807) married George Armitage (birth abt 1805)- marriage 14 May 1826 St Peters Huddersfield.

On 1841 census in Huddersfield with children Hannah, Jos and Sarah. I have not found them in 1851 - but Jos and younger brother named as James henry with bro William Armitage -Top o green Huddersfield.

Family in US with will records link a Thomas Henry Armitage with Hannah they both went to Pennsylvania. Thomas's death certificate says his birth is 8 May 1844 England. My grandfather Euan Cameron Armitage was named in the will.

The birth and death dates line up, as does the maiden name of the mother. I sent for death certifcate of a George Armitage Huddersfield in the March quarter 1844 but alas too young only 27 years old.

There is George Armitage on 1851 census Huddersfiled with a housekeeper

Isabella Talbot 7
John Talbot 5 wk

The children are listed as illigetimate.
Eldest 10 years old

Seems a long shot. I have not found a Mary Armitage that looks close to our Mary in 1851
Apart from my cousins and me sending for about 12 death certs between us for George Armitages who died in Huddersfiled around the time not sure where to go next.

Did they split up, did George die and Mary have a fling and a sense of humour to put stork on the certificate. Was Stork the name of the father? Was it her mother's family name?

Any suggestions gratefully received

Many thanks

JA
