Just had a look on the Antiquus Morbus site - the nearest I can find is "brain fever", which suggests:

"Cerebral fever, phrenitis", "meningitis", "inflammation of the brain or meninges, as in encephalitis or meningitis" or "Meningitis caused by bacteria and often fatal. Synonyms: cerebrospinal fever, cerebrospinal meningitis, epidemic meningitis."

We have just received a death certificate for my great granddad x3 [1811-1854] which states that he died of disease of the brain-certified. Can anyone please help me to understand what exactly this would have meant? Any info would be gratefully received.
