Hi - can you please advise the best way to locate someone who was adopted at birth. the person is female so likely to have changed their name several times - when adopted, married, etc. Your advice is much appreciated - regards Loretta Croker

It is hard to locate an adoptee, unless they are also searching for their birth family.
Are you a birth relative ? do you know which agency arranged the adoption ?

Locating an adopted person is virtually impossible unless you have the adoptive name or part of it.

If you have a name then you can search the index of the Adopted Children Register and apply for the Adoption Certificate. However, it is a long shot but it can be done as I did it myself as I knew my brother's adoptive first name. It's also very costly as I needed to buy a number of Adoption Certificates before I got the right one.

If you are a birth family member you can apply for contact through an Adoption Support Agency there will be a charge for this.

If you are a relative and know where the adoption records might be, you can leave a letter for the adoptee to be placed on their file
