Official adoption had only been going for ten years when this lady was born - it started in 1927 - if you live near Kew, you can go in and look at birth records in the registers, but you cannot see adoption records, only a note of the 'new name' in the special book, but you know both names anyway.

. I think I am right in saying that if Brenda/Patricia wants her adoption records she has to ask for them herself, and will also have to undertake counselling to judge whether she can see them. However as she knows her original name and her adopted name I can't see that she needs to go down this route as it is mainly to find out your original name. Also possibly the records may not still exist, or if they do, they may not be very detailed at that time. After she has got her mother's birth cert. which would show her mother's parents, she could then ask for a search of the deaths register to determine whether her mother is still alive, this would also be at Kew. You would also have to ask for a search to see if her mother had married, and therefore changed her surname. Her mother would be into her eighties or thereabouts, its possible she would still be alive, but probably a good thing not to delay.

There are people on here who are able to do searches of electoral roles, but you would need to have an accurate name, and possible area to search. So your starting point for that would be if her mother had married, and any addresses that were on the marriage cert. Also witnesses are often relations, which could be useful in pinpointing things. You would also get a Church name and area, which would show what Parish she was living in at the time.
Good luck - the detective work can be fun.

You need to order her original birth certificate the reference is below, you can order it online for £7 from
Nationalarchives.gov.uk

Birth Ref

Brenda D Waldron Jun 1937 Tendring 4a 1341 (mother Waldron)

This will give the parents names but probably only the mothers.

You will need to apply for her adoption records to find out other personal details
