He ran a pub.

Could've been a glorified barman but usually meant he ran/owned the place.

A Tavern or Innkeeper or Publican - term still used today for someone who runs a Pub

Am I right in thinking they sold ale and food and also rented rooms for lodgers? I think that is what I was told by someone in the past.

According to Colin Waters - Dictionary of Old Trades, Titles and Occupations:

"Food shop keeper. Also inn keeper who also provides meals."
