Please can someone kindly tell me what 'Z' means when written in the space for occupation for the Head of the household on the 1901 census for my relative. He was 35 at this point. We have exhausted ourselves trying to work it out!! Any help greatly received.
THANK YOU
FIONA

You meant born c1866 didnt you.

I reckon whoever answered the enumerator didnt actually know what his occupation was or where he was born. Nor is there an entry for place of birth for any of the family. I get the feeling someone else gave (or in this case didnt give) the information. And the Z just means - no ********* idea

Well, this looks like him in 1891 shown as a mechanical engineer planer - as its southampton Id assume ships.
