I have the birth and marriage certificate for my gt grandmother born Annie Elizabeth Allsopp June 1874. There is no father listed on her birth certificate, mums name is Mary Allsopp, but on her marriage certificate father named as Henry Allsopp.

I found her on 1881 census living with her grandparents John and Ann Hudson at the same address she was born at so I know I have the correct Annie.

What I don't understand is that in 1871 her mum Mary is living with her parents John and Ann but shown as daughter-in-law and married.

In 1861 Mary Allsopp is shown living with her parents named Hudson and her sister Elizabeth Allsopp. Marys uncle and grandmother surname Vernon are also living there.

I just don't understand why the two daughters surnames are diferrent and why she is shown as married but still has the same surname in the 1871 census. Am I missing something here?

Hi Julie,

Not sure but she was shown as daughter in 1861 not daughter in law. Also don't understand why father was not on birth certificate but he was on marriage certificate. Sorry for delay in replying I've been replying to LfW's thread about no more look ups due to breaching copyright.

Regards

Hi Julie,

Yeah I guessed Ann Hudson was nee Vernon reading 1861 census. I just don't know where Allsopp comes in to it (both Mary and Elizabeth are named Allsopp unlike their parents.

Hi Julie,

I think I've totally lost the plot. I'm a bit lost on the info you've found regarding Ann Allsopp aged 31 and Elizabeth aged 1 where has this come from?

I was alreading thinking that the fathers name was made up.

Hi Julie,

Re your last.

I agree that Mary and Elizabeth are shown as grandaughter. That will be because Ann Vernon Ann Hudsons mother is shown as head of the house. When you look at the page before viewing the record it shows Ann as mother and John as father for both Mary and Elizabeth.
