Hi Rebecca

Another good site is

www.bmdshare.com

again it is free and you might be lucky like me to save money on B, M & D certs as people share thier information on this site.

Good luck and I do hope you realise the housework will suffer now!!!!

Hi Becky
Sorry about your Nan.
Make sure you check any old diaries or note books. I found some of my Grandfathers papers which gave dates of birth/marriage/death for many of my great aunts and uncles.
Good luck

This site has been a mainstay for me, all the invaluable tips so generously given, a wonderful bunch of people.
I have saved so much ordering my certs from GRO, but my Scottish certs costs £10 from Scotlandspeople.

I've been researching for 18 months so still a beginner really compared to some.
In my first month i collated alot of info,my biggest mistake was not noting where i had sourced the info from, this now has made my job 100 times harder as i have had to go back and refind the info.
Hence, my advice is to take notes of where you get ALL your info from, even if it seems irrelevant at the time.

Good luck with your researching, the guys here have been a fantastic help with my research.

Thank you guys, I'm UK based and I think that most of my family are too although one branch is in NZ and my Granddad was born in Canada!

David thank you for the list! I'm awash with info and enthusiasm :-)))

I hope to get to know you guys better as you sound really nice and have already been really helpful!!

Rebecca, a good start is to make notes of what you do know, and any family stories you have heard.

Where do you live, just UK, Scotland, USA or Australia, New Zealand? Do not tell me the town/city. Just easier to advise if we know the continent.

At least you do have a couple of generations to start with. Bonus.

Their a great bunch of people on this site. And, some very dedicated genealogists who will go out of their way to help.

Couple of tips. If you put a thread up asking for information, stay close to you computer in case someone asks a question. Second, try and say thank you when someone answers, sometimes we get so wrapped up with what information is provided we forget.

Thanks Gail!,

I am already hooked, I remembered my dad telling a story about his uncle dying in the second world war in a training mission and looked on the Graves site and found his in Paisley which is a bit eerie!

I really appreciate the help and can't wait to get started properly!

Have pushed up some information threads for you.

When you start buying certificates do not ever pay any more the 7 pounds and only buy from GRO. I got caught when I started and paid a mint for certs.

If you get stuck, put a thread up and ask for help. We all had to start somewhere.

Welcome Becky.

I use Family Tree Maker 2008. It is a very good programme to get serious with. There are some free tree software.

We all start with what we know and sometimes it is nothing at all, I started my mother in laws tree with her marriage certificate and went from there.

Be warned this is very addictive.

I am going to push up a couple of threads for newbies, I will do that now.

Hi all,

My Nan died recently and thinking about the family I have realised I know nothing about my family history at all, I can go back two generations on my Mums side and three on my dad's and most of that info is family stories rather than knowledge. I guess its a bit late to realise this now after all the family members who can remember the second world war have passed on but hey ho.

So upshot is I have taken it upon myself to start digging, the problem is where do you start??!

What kind of records can I access through the web? Also any recomendations as to software to track the tree?

Many thanks

Becky
