Paying for baptisms

Anything to do with Parish Relief? I understand that some families had their children baptised twice in order to claim this money.

I have seen on some parish baptism records a note made by the vicar.............'bill sent'.

Maybe they were the ones who needed a reminder!

I read somewhere that some families, because they could not afford to pay, would have the child baptised (presumably along with several other children when there would be a little crowd present) and then run off before the details were added to the register.

I did find that sad - especially as I know how poor some of mine were ...

Sorry if this is slightly off track but it is a subject that fascinates me no end.

Keith states that 3d in 1815 was worth 78p in 2007 using the retail price index, £8.38 using the average earnings.

What this also tells us that ignoring price inflation, we now earn 10 times more now, than we did in 1815.

I did a quick calculation based on the wage I got when I first started work in 1970, with A Level qualifications. This was £650 per year working for a well known high street BBank,
This equates to 1.78 a day or 25 p an hour.

Based on the RPI today, I would have got £7,200, less than today's average wage....! Based on the earnings index, £13,000 which indicates that real pay has doubled in the last 30 odd years.

A similar comparison going back to 1951, shows that someone earning £5 a week ( a damned good wage for the time) would get just over £100 a week now, but in reality earns three times this much once wage increases are taken into account.

Dear Potty,
Thank you for your message. To answer your question, both the entries are the same date. Another GU member who has the same line as me is going to research the two bp enteries in a few weeks. Hopefully it will become clearer then. I know that the two parishes are close together so it may well be a 'from a "daughter" church or chapel'.

Dear Keith,
Thank you very much. I didn't know about the website you indicated. It will be very useful in researching my families social history.

Are the duplicate baptisms on the same date? If so,
could one of the records be from the Bishops Transcripts or possibly from a "daughter" church or chapel?

Dear Keith,
Thank you for your reply. I was wondering as some of my relies seem to have been baptised in two places (or at least registered in two parishes).

Was 3d a lot of money?

Thank you once again.

I know payment had to be made at one time, but not sure when, will have to check on the date period. I think it was 3d at the time if I remember correctly (seem to remember seeing that written beside some baptism entries.)

In 1815 ish did parents have to pay the vicar for such things like baptisms?
Thanks.
