I have hoards of old negatives dating back to about 1913. They were in different sizes. They were my mothers and grandmothers. I have prints of some of them.

Here in NZ it is now expensive to get prints made off b&w negs.

My son has a scanner which will do negs (I dont think my cheaper scanner does). He just places the neg on the glass rather than using the special neg holder. He scanned lots of the negs including some of our 120 negs and some square ones (same width as 120). He also scanned a glass neg from about 1913. It was larger than 120. Apart from the fact he had it wrong side down (a sign is back to front) it came out well.

He put all the scannings onto CDs for me and I now have them saved to computer.

I scanned a 120 colour transparency that I have but it is not very good. Son has scanned some 35 mm colour transparencies, they came out fine.

I love old photos.

Huia.

Thank you all very much for your replys.....sorry I didn't answer right away but I was turning my house up-side down in search of some other photos that I have mis-placed.

I have sent an e-mail to a photographic club in my local area and am awaiting a response from them.

Susan , yes indeed I am over joyed at the find.I'm hoping one of the ones I managed to scan might be my paternal G.Grandfather.I'll have to send a copy to my Uncle as he is the only one left living who would know.

Thank you all for your imput , I'll have a try at each idea.

I would think you would need someone who has specific skills in working with old negatives.

I would try your local library. They may have details of a local photography club who could point you in the right direction.

Good luck

Hello ,

I'm just hoping that someone on here might be able to give me some advice.
I've just found ( to my immense joy ) a packet of old negatives ( circa 1930 ) they are rather large ( 6cm x 9 cm ). I've had a bit of a go at scanning them and it's a bit hit and miss. Some of them are so faded and indistinct that my scanner can't detect anything but a few have worked ( but not in full as my scanner only does 35mm negs ).

Is it somehow possible to ever get a picture from a very faded negative or am I on a hiding to nothing ?
Would I need to find a person with proper photography skills ?

Any ideas ?
The bits I have managed to scan are lovely. To see my dear old Dad when he was a bright button of a lad has been fantastic.
