Big sigh of relief. Had an email from ancestry saying they have not taken any money from me on either of my 2 guest accounts.
I am free from debt, hooray!

I think they only allow one free trial each.
Some people get over this by using a different credit card,a different email and a different account.

I seem to be in a bad state. My spelling is going to pot. I am now going to shut down my computer for a few hours to try to recover my senses.

I am on .com and have 2 trees there. When I emailed support asking how to cancel or downgrade as I had forgotten my password, the reply gave me a new password (no mention about downgrading).
I tried cancelling but it gave me the runaround. I think I gave my credit card number unfortunately, and I then realised it was for the other tree for which I had not taken up a free 14 day trial.
I have now managed to cancel the trial on the first tree. I will probably phone the free number in 2 and half hours to see if I have managed to unwittingly subscribe on the other tree.
I think after Christmas I might take up a 14 day trial on .co.uk, now that I know what is what. I am now writing websites and my login details including password in a notebook which I will try not to lose, instead of writing them on bits of paper which tend to get lost in the heaps I have. I must have printed off half a ream of paper in the past fortnight. Who said computers save paper?

If you want the World edition check the prices on:

Ancestry.co.uk £155.40
ancestry.com $300 or £205
ancestry.com.au $300 AU or £131
ancestry.fr. 200 Euros or £171

There are probably some other countries too.

They are all different.

Cancel and hope they email a good offer to return. If not, phone them and negotiate a good deal. Can't remember what I paid now but I must be almost due for renewal. Think it was about 150 US for World Deluxe.

I cant remember what password I used so sent an email to them saying I wanted to either cancel or downgrade to the cheapest one that covers the UK. When I took up the free trial the only option offered was for the most expensive. I have a limit of NZ$500 on my credit card so they would have a problem getting more from me, but I dont want to spend that much anyway.
Keep your fingers crossed that they will either cancel or give me a cheapy.

Sorry Huia, went to bed.

I have Annual U.K. Heritage Collection Membership. I do not need World Membership only UK and OZ records.

There is so much on the UK collection though. They are adding all the time as well.

It is expensive, but in the long run is well worth it.

Thanks for that Gail. I might go for the essentials if they will let me.

Oooops, I had read Jims essentials price as NZ$6.95 per month, not English pounds. I was so tired and crosseyed from looking at the computer all day.

Is yours the essentials Gail?

Huia.

Huia

Huia Report 12 Nov 2008 11:58

Jim, does the Essentials membership include seeing census images, and visiting trees?

Huia

Huia Report 12 Nov 2008 11:55

I need to decide soon as I will need to cancel my free trial if I decide not to subscribe.
Perhaps I should spend what is left of the night looking things up.
Decisions, decisions.

Thelma

Thelma Report 12 Nov 2008 10:58

Ancestry has three types of membership.
The cheapest is
Essentials Membership Annual £6.95/month*
Which includes Scotland

Findmypast does not have the full 1901 census or any 1851(last time I looked)

Why not wait until your Genes membership is due and upgrade to Gold, £25 extra for 6 months.(If you have renewal every 6 months)

Just noticed that they have a 14 day trial on the site which I may go for and see what happens then decide to buy

If you pay by credit card, the exchange rate will be that set on the day the transaction goes through.

If you want a rough guide to how much it will cost you - an annual Worldwide membership of £155 in 12 monthly installments of £12.95 is roughly, at today's exchange rate NZ$35.96 per month...

There are many currency converters available on the Web - try a search for one. I use the one on the DHL co.uk website.
Best wishes

How much does it cost in NZ dollars? I am thinking of taking it out for a year (less if I am allowed). I have had so many interruptions in the last 11 days and there is still a lot I want to do. I am feeling so frustrated.

Anybody know or can tell me where to find out? Too late at night for me to think at the moment.

Huia.
