Hi

If I order a certificate and, for example, put the mother's maiden name as a reference check, does it cost me less than the £7 if the birth certificate does not match the check?

they wont send the certificate and you get a £4 refund.ie they charge £3 for the search.

This search fee applies too if you dont have the GRO ref and they have to search for the cert within a 3 year period ,they charge £10 for that.ie £7 for the cert & £3 search fee

I've never ordered certificates from GRO, always from the Register Office for the area where the birth/marriage/death occured.

In my experience, when I have given a reference eg mothers's maiden name and the details didn't match I have always got my cheque returned to me.

I've ordered lots of certs from all over England & Wales.
