Is this his birth? He seems to be the only John E. Oakland birth in Nottingham who would be of the right sort of age to be called up at the start of the first world war:-

Name: John Edward Oakland
Year of Registration: 1882
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Nottingham
County: Nottinghamshire
Volume: 7b
Page: 316

the census is full of John Oaklands from Nottingham!!!! - as Kathleen has said, hers is the only one from the right date, but if you are looking further back take a look on the free Mormon LDS site

Have you found his Service Records for WWI? that might give you a bit more information, and then further clues so that people can help.
