My grandfather was in the RFC but I believe he must have been transferred to the army when the RAF was formed. I visited TNA at Kew and looked for records of him but drew a blank. Lots of records of such people were destroyed in WWII. Where records do exist, it's quite likely that several other servicemen had exactly the same name and research can get seriously time-consuming. It's also pretty harrowing when you start wondering just how many of the names and numbers represent people who came back in one piece. So I'd suggest that if you go to the TNA you take a couple of other interesting subjects to investigate instead. And don't miss out on the cake. Good luck.

I'd suggest you look at the Research Guide on the RFC/RAF on the site George has given to you. Depending on when he left, his records might be with the RAF - I think 1919 onwards..

Laura

I understand that service records of RAF personnel prior to 1924 are held by the natonal archives,

Have a look at this link which explains, dont know if these records are online, or you have to visit Kew, perhaps someone else will know and advise.

Hope this helps

hello,
i wonder if anyone could give me some advice?
i'm trying to find info for a friend about their great grandfather. He was born in Canada, but moved to England and fought in WWI with the RFC, and i assume the RAF when the changeover took place in 1917. any idea where i can find some records? cant see a service record or pension record, or a medal card, so im a bit flummoxed.
thanks in advance, L :-)
