It copies it and leaves it on GR. I have copied mine on to PAF.

Hello

Being a bit dense here - but if you transport the information using a Gedcom file - does it remove the tree from say Genes or Ancestry and transfer it to you, or does it copy it and leave it on there as well please?

Thanks
Alison

Hi, yes you can import a GEDCOM, you can do this by exporting you tree from the bottom of this page, it then sends the file to your registered email address and you can then save and import it onto Family Tree Maker. I bought our's from My History, you can pay online as well. Their website is:

www.my-history.co.uk

They also sell many other resources.

Thanks you for that.

I was just going for the platinum one cause you get 6 months ancestry and I pay about £12 a month at the moment for it - so it will more than pay for itself.

The only thing is, on the FTM there are areas for different ref material which GR doesnt have, so you can fiddle around adding a lot more stuff.

Also, I often click on the tools and use the error checker, amazing what it brings up on the FTM.

Do you really need the platinum one? Have a look on this website - it gives comparisons of the various editions and costs. Very good site, personal service and lifetime support :) Same with twr computing - check their prices too

Personally I still prefer the 2006 version - I have that and the 2008 and 2009. The 2006 can be had for about a fiver now I think.

Hello Again

Ive seen the platinum addition (includes 6 months free ancestry) on sale on Ancestry for £60 but can get a new one from ebay from £43.50.

Any one else got any ideas if I can get it any cheaper?

Thanks

Michelle

I've just come across this and I'm grateful too as I'm waiting for FTM to be delivered! I did download some free software that didn't cut the mustard and spent some time manually transferring the data. I asked the software support if I could transfer from a website but never got an answer.

It is very easy to transfer your tree from GR to FTM I was nervous when I did it first time. When I ask GR to export my file I get it almost straight away. Just save the attached file they send you and then choose to open it in FTM. All the information is copied into FTM so you do not have to type it again.
Good luck Irene

Scroll to the bottom of your GR page and click on the import/export tab, then export.

GR will prepare the file for you and email it to your nominated em address within a day or so.

Once received save the file onto your pc, say your desktop.

Double click on it and FTM should open it and load it in.

If you already have a tree on FM and want to add / mere the GR data then load the file using the append / merge option from within FTM.

Yes, you can create a gedcom and transfer it to FTM (but don't ask me how because I've never moved my information around, lol).

Hello

So, Ive made the decision to buy some software and have just been looking at FH and FTM but think im going to go for FTM.

At the moment the only tree that I have is here on GR and I have about 300 relatives on there (as it is really a joint tree between myself and my mother-in-law).

What I would like to know is if I buy FTM can I automatically import the information from GR or do Ihave to re-type it all in again?

Many thanks

Also - does anyone know the cheapest place to buy it?
