What is the chance of a person being on the 1861 census twice ...... once at the family address and once as a "visitor" elsewhere ?

I'm fairly convinced I have the same person twice but how unlikely is that ?

It is likely.I have one who was a monthly nurse. she is listed at her place of work ie where she was nursing the new mum ,and at her home address too. Its anyones guess which house she was actually at on the census night.

Very likely......I have a number of instances of this in my own 'tree'

Yes, I have found this to be quite common. I have one where the mother was working at a laundry down the road and the father was at the family home. They both put down the same child. Of course it is possible the lad ran down the road from one place to the other and was therefore included on both!

This query comes up about once a month and YES they can appear twice, particularly if they are entered as visitor at one address.

Yes I have an example too. My ggg grandmother is on the 1861 census twice. Once at home and again visiting a friend, about a quarter of a mile away at the other end of the village.

Yes, I have an instant in the census 1861 where the names of the family are all spelt atrociously and living in one place and then the other all nicely worded and with another address. They are one and the same not two different families as I first thought.Makes life difficult when researching.

I found an opposite problem: 2 wives and five children transcribed on ancestry when the original clearly shows 1 wife and 2 children. I guess everyone has bad days.

I found my great aunt twice on the 1901 census, she was shown at her parents address and again on her sister's address.

Oh so glad this is common. I have Thomas Holland and his wife Jane, registered in both Bollington and Coppenhall, Cheshire in 1881. I guess the daughters of his new wife just told the enumerator that they normally lived in Bollington.

I found the same family enumerated twice in Aberdeen, once at their front door and once (in a different ED) at their back door.
