I have just been told that my paternal grandmother Edith Mary Clifton (nee Baker) had another son apart from my father.

My mum has told me everything she remembers.

She can remember his name being Norman, he lives in Sheffield. She said that she visited him once, his house was cramped and there were a lot of children.

I want to try and find him, the only problem is, he was put up for adoption and has a different surname to my fathers and my mum can't remember what it is. My grandmother died in 2001, so I cannot ask her about it.

Does anyone know what I can try?

Thanks,
Mandy

Oh, my grandmother was born in 1928, Stockton on Tees, Durham.

My mum said that Norman was 15/20 years older than my father who was born in 1965.

I have looked on 192 for Norman Bakers living in Sheffield..there are only 2, so I'm going to try and write to both and see if his did keep his mothers maiden name...

If your Mum visited him it would suggest that perhaps he was adopted within the family, - maybe not even a formal adoption.
Can your Mum remember an address,? - even the road would help, then you could search the electoral lists for that road and search for Norman.
I know you can do this without a surname because I did so for someone on GR.

She isn't sure on his surname at all, so I am hoping I can find someone who knew him.

She said she cann't remember the street name or house number, only that he lives in Sheffield, was married at the time of her visit and had a lot of children.

Hi

In order to apply for an adoption certificate you have to know the full name of the adoptee. You will not find this information in the births register or on his original birth certificate.

After an adoption has been granted in the court the child is then registered on the Adopted Children Register in their adoptive name... this register is NOT for public view although INDEX is available in certain areas.

Adoption certificates do not give the name of the birth parents... it only gives you the name and address of the adoptive parents, a/fathers occupation, name and date of court where the adoption was granted.

Your best bet is to search for Norman's birth and apply for his original birth certificate... it should be amended to show the word 'adopted' If you wish to make contact you can apply to an adoption support agency.

You might like to check out:
