why do the gro insist on having date of birth when i try to order birth cert online when i have vol and page number also why cant i download aplication form painterman

There's a fifty year rule which applies to births. If you're trying to order a birth cert that falls within the past 50 years, you'll have to provide required fields*. It's a part of the privacy acts.

Is it a recent birth?

If so, I believe that the actual birth date has to be known.

Why do you need to download an application form if you are ordering from GRO?

I don't understand. I frequently order certificates and merely require the year, forename, surname, volume and page numbers, and the district. I never have to give a dob. Secondly why do need to download the appication form for an online order?

Have you ticked the box where the question is posed 'Are GRO refs known?'

If you don't tick it.....they will ask for DOB

You need the following additional information when ordering a cert for someone under 50

Form Errors
Date of birth must be given if birth occurred in last 50 years
Father's full name must be given if birth occurred in last 50 years
Mother's maiden surname and forename must be given if birth occurred in last 50 years

Would it not be easier to ask your family for info on this person?

hi claire thank you for your reply i can not ask any family about this as they are all deceased thats the ones that would have known my sister informed me of the birth she only knew that the child was born and her name but no dates. the date was found by a kind person on this board painterman

Sorry but it looks like you'll have another 2 years wait unless you can find her name listed on here/Friends Reunited/Facebook etc

Provided you have the rest of the info required, you can pick up her DOB from her death which should be shown on Ancestry

Date of births won't show on the death index - I know because my Nan died in 1962. I think they show from the late 60s but have forgotten when.

date of birth on death indexes are from 1969
