War Deaths

Includes

Boer War (Army)

World War 1 (Army/Navy/ some Royal Air Force - for those men in the Royal Flying Corp they were registered by the Army)

World War 2 (Army/Navy/Royal Air Force)
Please note that the records held do not contain a large amount of information. Often the record will only contain name, rank, service number, date (or presumed date) of death and place of death (often just recorded as the theatre of war e.g. 'France') the cause of death will normally be recorded on any certificate as 'killed in action', 'died of wounds' or 'on war service'. More information may be obtained from either the service record of the individual or their memorial.

See our list of useful UK websites at: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/othersources

All services: death certificates
Death certificates for the British war dead are held by the General Register Office not The National Archives. Postal applications should be sent to the General Register Office, PO Box 2, Southport, Merseyside PR8 2JD (Telephone 0845 603 7788, or for international callers: +44 151 471 4200; fax 01704 55 00 13). For further information please contact their website www.gro.gov.uk

French and Belgian death certificates for British and Commonwealth soldiers and airmen, who died in hospitals or elsewhere outside the immediate war zone, are at The National Archives, in RG 35/45-69 .

They are arranged alphabetically.
Certificates for surnames beginning C, F, P, Q, and X are missing.
Certificates for unknown soldiers are under U.
They are in French or Flemish and can be informative.

Military death reference numbers can be found on the Findmypast website (which is pay per view).

The most likely cause of death on these certificates is simply "killed in action".
