Please can someone help!
Help!!!

Did Preston Hudson(Bn June 1792) marry Ellin Burrow or Eleanor Burrow on 11 May 1812 in Beetham Westmorland.

According to Family Search it was Ellen but 1841 census say's Eleanor.

The problem is I have both in my tree born around the same date (1785) and in the same place (Beetham,Westmorland)but to different parents and another possible spouse for Ellen if she was not married to Preston.

Thanks
Sue

Hi Anne,

Many thanks

Yes that confirms the entry I found and supports the info I got from someone else with the same people in there tree.

Will go with that unless anyone else proves otherwise

There is a very good chance she registered Preston's death. If you really want to know I suggest you buy that.

On official stuff - registrations & parish records she seems to be Ellen, but she probably called herself Eleanor as that is what is recorded on the censuses.

Susan,

As a general rule you should not expect consistency in the spelling of names in this period. The form and spelling of names very much depended on the whim or hearing of the registrar/census enumerator/parish clerk or on the clarity of enunciation of the informant. In short your two candidates could easily swap names over their lifetime.

In Census records and in lots of Bmds the names Ellin.Ellen..Eleanore etc are very interchangeable and seem to me to depend on who wrote them down and how good their hearing was.
Use you gut instinct.

Since when did Ellen and Eleanor become different names?

I have an instance of somebody who was sometimes Eleanor, sometimes Ellen, sometimes Helen. She was definitely the same person though.

Many thanks for all that info.

I was quite happy to accept Ellen & Eleanor as the same person until I came across a 1851 census entry for her brother Richard which showed his sister Ellen living at the same address but with a different surname. However I already had a census return for the same year for Eleanor Hudson .

This throws up a couple of possibilities.
1, Not the same Richard Burrow in which case not same Ellen.(although the dates and locations match)
2, Right Richard and Ellen in which case I have attached Preston to the wrong person and need to go back through my tree and sort out all the wrong family and there descendants (oh the joy)

Guess I know what research I'm doing today
