Karina,

where did you get the information from?

Registration of bmds began on July 1 1837, before that, you have to find the parish registers.

One place to look is on the International Genealogical Index found on www.familysearch.org, the Mormon site ..... but be sure to distinguish carefully between EXTRACTED and SUBMITTED records ................... the former have been taken from the actual registers and records. Submitted records have been sent in by a church member and may not be accurate.

You could also try looking at Pallot's Marriage Index.

Or go to British Origins, www.britishorigins.com, and see what you can find on there. There is a free name search, but you have to subscribe to see any of the records.

Actually, Richard is not quite right with his date of 1843.

1843 is when the Wesleyan Church was formed in the USA (spreading to Canada and Australia), and were so named to distinguish themselves from the British Welseyan Methodists, who followed the teachings of John Wesley.

The British Wesleyan Methodist Church was formed much earlier. It severed its connection with the Protestant Church and became an autonomous body in 1791.

And there is your problem!!!

Most of the records are of bmds registered in the Protestant church, the "state" church if you like of England.

You might want to see if you can find anything on www.bmdregisters.co.uk ... this site is attempting to get non-parochial records pre-1837 on to the internet.

Maybe contact Wesley's Chapel in London. I'm not sure that they would have been doing marriages there in the early 1800's, as only CofE churches could do that up until 1837. But you could contact the church and ask them:

I am trying to find a marriage record of Robert Robinson (b 1796 Haddenham, Cambridgeshire) to a Ann Hammond (b c1800).
I am lead to believe that they were married in the Wesylan Church, in London.
Anyone know what parish this church was in and where I might be able to obtain a copy of this record.
Thank you
