I have a gentleman that died between 1891 and 1901 unfortunately because of his common name the actual date of death would be hard to find and the will be more interesting anyway,

What do I say and send to the Probate office to cover this request?

Thanks Gil

Just checked and found this...

What if I do not have the full information?
If you are prepared to spend the time, you might be able to find what you are looking for with very little information other than the surname of the deceased.

If you ask the Registry to make the search for you, we will do our best with whatever information you can supply, but without at least the correct full name, and the year from which you want the search to begin it will not be possible to identify the correct record.

Have a look here, it has all the info you need:

Do you have access to Findmypast? They have the following database which covers the timeframe you mention
Search the index to death duty registers 1796 - 1903

If your man left a will or admon then he'll be listed. The database is indexed by year so you'll still need to search each hand written page; the pages contain:
Name of deceased
Residence - this is usually the town
Exector or administrator
Registry
No. of affidavit
Will or Admon
Folio

If you don't have access to FMP PM me the surname and the year and I'll send you the image.
Thanks
